Team Physician and Athlete Advocacy (TPAAC)

Committee Profile

Reports To:Knowledge Discovery (Research) Council

TPAAC develops policies, positions, programs and activities related to the responsibilities of team physicians. Members serve as a resource for other AOSSM Committees, and liaise with other organizations in suggesting activities, topics, speakers and responses related to the team physician and athletes’ safety. They work with the AAOS Office of Government Relations (OGR) to identify advocacy priorities, draft responses – testimony or official comments – to proposed legislation or regulation and communicate to the AOSSM membership and leadership regarding those priority issues through Board Reports, regular columns in Sports Medicine Update (SMU), and oral reports to the Council of Delegates.

Committee Term:

Members-at-large serve three (3) consecutive years upon appointment; Chairperson can serve either two (2) consecutive years or (3) consecutive years, depending on when they were named to the chair role.

Committee Size: Maximum of 10 total, including 9 members-at-large and one chairperson.
Rotation Schedule: 1/4/5 (2024: 1; 2025: 4; 2026: 5; 2027: 1; 2028: 4; 2029: 5)

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop policy, positions, programs, and activities related to the responsibilities of team physicians.
  • Serve as a resource for AOSSM Committees and liaise with other organizations in suggesting activities, topics, speakers, and responses related to team physician and athletes’ safety.
  • Work with the AAOS Office of Government Relations (OGR) to identify advocacy priorities, draft responses – testimony or official comments – to proposed legislation or regulation and communicate to AOSSM membership regarding those priority issues through Board Reports, regular columns in Sports Medicine Update (SMU), and oral reports to the Council of Delegates.

Time Commitment:

  • Most of this committee’s work will be conducted via email.
  • Quarterly conference calls.
  • One in-person meeting at Annual Meeting.

Qualifications:

  • All members*, except those in the International category, are eligible to serve as committee members at large.
  • Chairperson must be an AOSSM Active Member.
  • *Residents are eligible to volunteer for a one-year term on this committee; however, they may only observe in a non-voting capacity.

Get Involved in The Society

Volunteer committees form the lifeblood of AOSSM and provide guidance for Society programs and projects. Every year, we accept new volunteers to serve on our standing committees. The application period will open in January.
