Self-Assessment Exam

Reports To:Knowledge Access (Education) Council

The members of the Self-Assessment Exam Committee plan, develop, and evaluate the yearly AOSSM Self-Assessment Examination (SAE). Based on the AOSSM Educational Curriculum, the Self-Assessment is recognized by The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) SAE credit. The exam is designed to help learners identify their own strengths and weaknesses in the clinical and practice management areas of orthopaedic sports medicine.

Committee Term:

Members-at-large serve three (3) consecutive years upon appointment; Chairperson can serve either two (2) consecutive years or (3) consecutive years, depending on when they were named to the chair role.

Committee Size: Maximum of 34 total, including 33 members-at-large and one chairperson or 32 members-at-large and two co-chairs.
Rotation Schedule: 5/8/21/10/10/15 (2024: 5; 2025: 8; 2026: 21; 2027: 10; 2028: 10; 2029: 15)

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • The members of the Self-Assessment Exam Committee plan, develop, and evaluate the yearly AOSSM Self-Assessment Examination (SAE).

Time Commitment:

  • Committee members are assigned to be a reviewer or writer each year, although this may vary.
  • Question reviewers collaborate to review the questions. Question writers are assigned approximately 15 questions to write for the exam.

Qualifications:

  • Committee members must understand the requirements for the ABOS Subspecialty Certification in Sports Medicine.
  • All members, except those in the International category, are eligible to serve as committee members at large.
  • Chairperson must be an AOSSM Active Member.

Get Involved in The Society

Volunteer committees form the lifeblood of AOSSM and provide guidance for Society programs and projects. Every year, we accept new volunteers to serve on our standing committees. The application period will open in January.
