Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Committee Profile

Reports To:Executive and Governance Council
The members of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee facilitate integration of DEI into the AOSSM infrastructure, functions, and culture to better support the diverse populations we serve. Devoted to educating AOSSM members and the orthopaedic community on the importance, definitions, objectives, and practice of DEI. Advocates for the mission of integrating existing strategies and guidelines to mitigate unconscious bias and to foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion across all aspects of AOSSM membership, leadership and programming. Serves to promote the AOSSM’s evolution toward a more inclusive and diverse society with respect to operations, education, community engagement and patient care.
Committee Term: Members-at-large serve three (3) consecutive years upon appointment; Chairperson can serve either two (2) consecutive years or (3) consecutive years, depending on when they were named to the chair role.
Committee Size: Maximum of 12 total, including 11 members-at-large and one chairperson or 10 members-at-large and two co-chairs.
Rotation Schedule: 3/2/7 (2024: 3; 2025: 2; 2026: 7; 2027: 3; 2028: 2; 2029: 7)

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates integration of DEI into the AOSSM infrastructure, functions, and culture to better support the diverse populations we serve.
  • Devoted to educating AOSSM members and the orthopaedic community on the importance, definitions, objectives, and practice of DEI.
  • Advocates for the mission of integrating existing strategies and guidelines to mitigate unconscious bias and to foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion across all aspects of AOSSM membership, leadership and programming.
  • Serves to promote the AOSSM’s evolution toward a more inclusive and diverse society with respect to operations, education, community engagement and patient care.
  • DEI committee members serve as ex officio members on other AOSSM committees, ensuring two-way communication between each committee and DEI.

Time Commitment:

  • Most of the committee’s work will be conducted via email and group chat
  • Three (3) to four (4) virtual conference calls each year as needed.
  • One in-person meeting at Annual Meeting

Qualifications:

  • All members, except those in the International category, are eligible to serve as committee members at large.
  • Chairperson must be an AOSSM Active Member.

Get Involved in The Society

Volunteer committees form the lifeblood of AOSSM and provide guidance for Society programs and projects. Every year, we accept new volunteers to serve on our standing committees. The application period will open in January.
