                                                                                  All are important aspects of MOC. But
                                                                                  the ABOS has made many improvements
                                                                                  to the Knowledge Assessment part of
                                                                                  MOC over the last few years and I want to
                                                                                  make sure that you—a busy orthopaedic
                                                                                  surgeon—know what knowledge
                                                                                  assessment options are available to you.
                                                                                  No matter what option you choose, you
                                                                                  still have to complete the other parts
                                                                                  of the ABOS MOC program. You can
                                                                                  submit your Application and Case List
                                                                                  in year 7, 8, or 9 of your 10-year cycle.
                                                                                  The ABOS highly recommends that you
                                                                                  complete the Application and Case List
                                                                                  process in year 7 as that will give you
                                                                                  the most opportunities to be successful
                                                                                  with the Knowledge Assessment options.

                                                                                  Let’s look at each ABOS MOC Knowledge
                                                                                  Assessment option.

                                                                                  Computer-Based Examination
                                                                                  This is the examination that many
                                                                                  people think of when thinking of a
                                                                                  Recertification Examination. But if it
                                                                                  has been several years since you last
                                                                                  took an ABOS Examination, there have
                                                                                  been several significant changes.
                                                                                     If you hold ABOS Subspecialty
        When orthopaedic surgeons think of the Maintenance                        Certification in Orthopaedic Sports
        of Certification (MOC) program of the American                            Medicine, you will take what we
        Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), they often                           call a Combined Examination. This
