BOLD Progress: A Mid-point Update from the Playmakers

    • Early Career Engagement

It’s hard to believe that the first cohort of the AOSSM Boosting Orthopaedic Leaders Development (BOLD) program is halfway done!

At the mid-point of this pioneering initiative, we’ve gathered reflections from participants (known as BOLD Playmakers) to showcase the program’s impact on their professional and personal growth.

Fostering Confidence and Leadership: BOLD has been instrumental in boosting Playmakers’ confidence through connections with fellow early-career AOSSM members. BOLD sessions have prompted self-reflection and have helped Playmakers align values with their leadership style.

Jonathan Cheah, MD

“BOLD’s focus on leadership and mentorship has been a key component of this experience. The sessions on brand and mission development have been critical in promoting self-reflection and understanding the nuances of my values, which I aim to reflect in my collaborative leadership style.”

Aravind Athiviraham, MD

Enhancing Communication and Collaboration: BOLD has helped Playmakers hone their communication and leadership skills through collaborative group projects, fostering peer relationships that inspire new ideas and engage emerging leaders.

“Through BOLD, I learned the key concepts essential to build a culture of collaboration and lead a multidisciplinary team.”

Mentorship Guidance: Playmakers have received invaluable guidance and opportunities through formal mentorship relationships. Mentors have helped Playmakers navigate challenges and provide advice for opportunities on the horizon.

Bonnie Gregory, MD

“I was lucky enough to get matched with Dr. Peter Indelicato, which set up an amazing chance to have him come to Houston as a visiting professor this past fall, making connections that I know will continue for years to come.”

Andrew Sheean, MD

Building Lasting Connections: At BOLD’s kick-off session, Playmakers engaged in a team-building exercise followed by a social gathering, which set the stage for lasting friendships and professional bonds. Playmakers have been exposed to a number of thought-provoking sessions that have encouraged both self-reflection and group discussion

“We're forging friendships that will last for years to come, and we're all anxious to continue our development as the next generation AOSSM leaders.”

Integrating Leadership and Branding: Executive coaching has helped Playmakers integrate leadership and branding into professional identity. This integration has allowed Playmakers to map out an intentional plan for incorporating values into leadership.

Nicholas Bonazza, MD

“From BOLD, I have definitely come away with a better understanding of who I am as leader and how my authentic brand comes from that leadership.”

The mid-point of the BOLD program highlights significant growth and development among Playmakers. Through mentorship, leadership coaching, and collaborative projects, BOLD Playmakers are shaping their professional identities and preparing to lead the future of orthopaedic sports medicine. As they continue their journey, their experiences and insights will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of surgeons. Look for more information about the next BOLD cohort in Winter 2025!
