Frequently Asked Questions
Learn more about this exciting new journal by accessing some of the most commonly asked questions below.
- What is an open access journal?
Open access journals provide a venue for researchers and clinicians to publish their data in a timely manner and reach individuals throughout the world while still receiving all the benefits of publishing in a peer-reviewed journal. There is no subscription charge to readers, so anyone can access the full text of every article. Open access encourages a large readership and frequent citation. This publication model is financed by modest article processing fees paid by the authors or their funding source at the time of acceptance.
- What types of articles are published?
OJSM focuses orthopaedic sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, relevant translational research, sports traumatology/epidemiology, and knee arthroplasty, and will do so by publishing original clinical research ranging from case series to randomized trials; controlled and descriptive laboratory studies; descriptive epidemiology studies; and meta-analyses and systematic reviews.
- How is this journal different from other AOSSM publications?
OJSM provides authors with a platform where they can enjoy unrestricted, international readership within the field. Since this journal is published online and open entirely to the public, it is not limited by subscriptions or page budgets, allowing for a broader variety of content than most print journals, including liberal use of color and video features, yet retains the high quality that readers have grown to appreciate from the AOSSM.
A modest author publication fee of $1,000 is assessed upon acceptance. Discounted fees are available for those who meet the following criteria:
- $750 if the author is a member of an affiliated society (current affiliates) or if the contribution is cascaded from another journal associated with an affiliated society (current cascade options: AJSM, Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach)
- The processing fee will be waived if the author resides in a low-income or lower-middle income country as noted by the World Bank
- What are the benefits of publishing in OJSM?
Authors can expect fast editorial decisions and quick production of their articles if accepted for publication. Accepted material will be readily available to an unlimited audience worldwide shortly after production. In addition, authors both within and outside North America now have a new and widely respected publishing platform for their important research. Publishing under the AOSSM name allows for high peer-review standards and a strong reputation in the field of orthopaedic sports medicine.
