AOSSM offers a wide variety of resources before, during, and after sports medicine fellowship training.

During fellowship training, a physician follows a specialist closely to train in sports medicine. The learning physician is known as a fellow. The fellow may participate in hundreds of surgeries within their year of training to earn their subspecialty. Being a sports medicine specialist is a coveted route in the orthopaedic field. Being accepted into a fellowship training program is a privilege reserved for the top doctoral graduates. A physician that chooses this path is committing to extra education and is devoted to providing the best medical care possible.

The Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy Match

AOSSM and the Arthroscopy Association of North America joined efforts to establish a Match Program utilizing SF Match Residency and Fellowship Matching Services (SF Match). SFMatch has provided matching services for more than 50,000 residents and fellows since 1977. The Match remains highly appealing for residents, as 69% of all applicants received their 1st or 2nd choice. The Match has enjoyed strong participation by both programs and applicants, with 97% of all orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship programs and 97% of all fellowship positions offered through the Fellowship Match.

Fellows Exam

The AOSSM Fellows Exam was developed to assist fellowship programs in identifying strengths and weaknesses in their fellows’ orthopaedic sports medicine clinical and practice management areas. This is a valuable tool for fellowship programs to use during training and for fellows to prepare for the subspecialty exam.

The cost of the program is $250 for each fellow and registration is available online. Typically, the pretest is available to fellows the last two weeks of August and the posttest is available during the first three weeks of June. After completing the online pretest and posttest, each fellow may review their score and comparative information among all of the fellows. The Fellowship Program Directors can review their fellows’ scores and comparative data.
