Why is the 2020 AOSSM Annual Meeting canceled?

The health, safety and well-being of our attendees, faculty, speakers, exhibitors and professional team is of paramount importance. Given the latest information available, the AOSSM Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 AOSSM Annual Meeting in Seattle, July 9-12.

Our leadership and professional team have been communicating daily to discuss recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO), as well as authorities in Seattle. We have also been tracking the travel policy restrictions affecting our members and attendees as many academic centers and health systems instituted travel bans or restrictions. It became clear that canceling is the right decision in order to protect the safety and well-being of meeting attendees. Furthermore, taking this action will ensure that our members, who represent a critical element of the healthcare workforce, are available to provide care to patients.

Are all additional events associated with the 2020 Annual Meeting canceled as well?

Yes, all educational and social activities scheduled to occur in Seattle are canceled. AOSSM leadership and the Professional Team are reviewing options for holding necessary business-related meetings in a virtual forum, and committees will make their own arrangements as needed.

Will the 2020 Annual Meeting be postponed until a later date or rescheduled?

Meetings such as the AOSSM Annual Meeting are planned years in advance. We carefully coordinate with each host city to accommodate our attendees during a specific timeframe and rescheduling is not an option.

Will any sessions be made available virtually?

AOSSM leaders, planning committee and the Professional Team are actively exploring options to provide components of the 2020 Annual Meeting in a virtual, online format. Information will be available in the coming weeks via sportsmed.org.

I was going to speak or present at this year’s meeting, is there anything I need to do?

We will be in touch to explain the next steps if your presentation will be needed for the virtual, online format.

I was going to present my abstract as either a paper or poster presentation, is there anything I need to do?

Yes. We are requesting that paper and poster presenters create a 5-minute PowerPoint presentation with audio. All presentations will need to be uploaded by June 1, via the speaker portal. You will receive an email with further details about what is expected for this presentation.

Will my accepted 2020 Annual Meeting abstract be published?

Yes. As in previous years, abstracts from podium presentations and posters will be published as an e-supplement in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine (OJSM). We expect this to be available in late July 2020. Publication of a meeting abstract does not preclude the publication of the full manuscript at a later date.

When is the next AOSSM Annual Meeting?

The next AOSSM Annual Meeting will take place in Nashville, TN, July 8-11, 2021.

Who can I contact for more information?

Email info@aossm.org and a member of the team will get back to you. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through all the details.
