Two Major Grant Awards Announced During 2024 Presidential Address

During the AOSSM 2024 Annual Meeting in Denver, President Dean C. Taylor, MD, announced the winner of a new multi-organization grant focused on clinical research investigating return to play after musculoskeletal injury. AOSSM, Arthrex, The Aircast Foundation, The Forum, and the J. R. Gladden Orthopaedic Society congratulate to Christian Lattermann, MD, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, on the award of $200,000 to support his study titled: “Development of a MPFL Reconstruction Return to Play Decision-Making Tool.” To be eligible for this grant, the investigative team had to include at least one member of AOSSM AND The Forum OR the J. R. Gladden Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Society in good standing.

In addition, Dr. Taylor shared the recipient of a second major award. AOSSM, in collaboration with the Arthroscopy Association of Northa American (AANA), the Society for Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), awarded a MAST grant to Patrick Mescher, MD, and his study, Harnessing Fully Immersive Virtual Reality (FI-VR) for Advanced Arthroscopy Skills Development: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellows Performing ACL Reconstruction.

The $75,000 award is the second MAST grant given in this cycle. The first was awarded at the inaugural MAST Summit in November, a collaboration between AOSSM, AANA, and SOMOS to foster research endeavors in the field of orthopaedics, particularly emphasizing its implications for both military and civilian populations.
