Brett D. Owens, MD, Announced as the New Editor-in-Chief of AJSM

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is proud to announce Brett D. Owens, MD, as the new Editor-in-Chief of its journal, The American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM).

AOSSM Board President Christopher Kaeding said, “We are very excited about Brett Owens, MD, becoming only the 4th Editor-in-Chief of our flagship journal, AJSM. He brings a special combination of experience and skills that will allow him to lead the journal to ever greater success and build upon the exceptional work of the editors that preceded him.”

“I am honored to be chosen to lead this esteemed publication,” said Dr. Owens. “I look forward to carrying on the 50-year legacy while taking an innovative approach to publishing and engagement of readership and the broader sports medicine field.”

A fellowship-trained, board certified orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in arthroscopic repair of sports-related injuries as well as complex knee and shoulder reconstructions, Dr. Owens assumes the Editor-in-Chief role after 12 years as Associate Editor of AJSM. "The AOSSM and Medical Publishing Board selected Brett from a very strong group of candidates based on the strength of his leadership and experience to lead the AJSM and preserve its role as the premier journal in sports medicine science and innovation," said Charles Bush-Joseph, MD, Chair, AOSSM Medical Publishing Board of Trustees.

Dr. Owens is the Chief of Sports Medicine at the Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospital in Providence and University Orthopedics, Inc. He is Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brown University Alpert Medical School and Professor of Surgery (Orthopaedics) at Uniformed Services University of Health Science. He has published over 350 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, given over 200 national and international presentations, and co-edited five textbooks in orthopaedics and sports medicine. Dr. Owens’ research has garnered five major awards from AOSSM.
