Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) - AHRQ is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality—the Nation's lead Federal agency for research on health care quality, costs, outcomes, and patient safety. It is the health services research arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), complementing the biomedical research mission of its sister agency, the National Institutes of Health. It is home to research centers that specialize in major areas of health care research including quality improvement and patient safety, outcomes and effectiveness of care, clinical practice and technology assessment, health care organization and delivery systems, primary care (including preventive services), and health care costs and sources of payment. AHRQ is also a major source of funding and technical assistance for health services research and research training at leading U.S. universities and other institutions.
Aircast Foundation - The Aircast Foundation is a private foundation, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which promotes excellence in scientific research and education in the area of orthopaedic medicine and science. The Foundation focuses on optimizing function and improving medical outcomes, and on biomedical research that exhibits creative and innovative solutions to complex medical problems. The Aircast Foundation encourages applications from young investigators and issues grants in the spring and fall of each year. The Foundation has announced the following funding initiatives: 2005: Projects involving Bone Repair and 2006: Projects involving Meniscal Healing. Grant proposals for other projects during these years will be considered but preference will be given to research proposals in these two areas.
American College of Sports Medicine - Through the ACSM Foundation and the Office of Research Administration and Programs, the College offers research grants to ACSM student members, as well as new and senior investigators. Funding areas include but are not limited to: injury prevention, weightlessness and space physiology, exercise and aging, exercise and cardiovascular disease risk factors, and exercise and heart rate response.
American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) - The “Young Investigator Grants” are intended for younger scientist-clinicians who are undertaking sports medicine research and meet specific criteria. AOSSM will issue awards in the amounts of up to $40,000, aimed at providing “seed money,” or start-up funds, for pilot projects. These are “one time only” awards; funds will be distributed over 24 months, with completion date of two years. The gross total for an award under this category of grants will not exceed $40,000. Any investigative team seeking such a grant must include at least one member of AOSSM in good standing.
American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons - The objective of the ASES Research Grant is to encourage new investigators by providing seed and start-up funding for promising shoulder and elbow research projects. Grants of up to $20,000, for work to be performed over 12-24 months, will be considered.
Arthritis Foundation - The Arthritis Foundation is the largest private, non-profit contributor to arthritis research in the world. Their Research Program complements government and industry-based arthritis research by focusing on training new investigators and pursuing innovative strategies for preventing, controlling and curing arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation funds three major types of grant mechanisms: 1) Career development and training programs -- These grants encourage scientists to begin research careers in the arthritis field and then help them nurture their development into independent arthritis researchers; 2) Investigator-initiated -- These grants support basic, clinical and health services research relevant to arthritis; and 3) Special targeted research initiatives -- These grants focus on promising areas of arthritis research or on specific types of arthritis.
Arthritis National Research Foundation - The Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) is dedicated to funding highly qualified investigators associated with major research institutes, universities and hospitals throughout the country who are seeking to discover new knowledge for the prevention, treatment and cure of arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. The focus of proposals should be on high incidence diseases. Clinical and basic studies will be considered. Clinical studies should both relate to and help reveal the underlying mechanisms involved in the disease. Priority will be given to newer investigators possessing either a M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree, affiliated with a qualified, non-profit institution. Grants are awarded for one year and the amount of award is in the range of $20,000 to $50,000.
Arthroscopy Association of North American (AANA) - The Research Committee of the Arthroscopy Association of North America accepts manuscripts for consideration for research grants and other research awards. These awards and grants are for clinical or basic science research in the field of arthroscopic surgery or disorders amenable to arthroscopic treatment.
National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Research & Education Foundation - The Foundation has resources available to fund a number of studies that address issues important to the healthcare of the physically active, to include basic science, clinical and educational studies.
National Football League Charities - NFL Charities makes annual medical research grants that target sports injury prevention, injury treatment, and other related research that affects the health and performance of athletes. The National Football League is committed to supporting research and enhancing the body of scientific knowledge that will benefit all those involved in competitive sports and recreational athletic activities. Funding is available for non-profit educational and research institutions only. For-profit enterprises are not eligible to apply. Grants of up to $125,000 are available. Click here, to apply online.
National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) - NIAMS both supports and conducts medical research. The majority of our budget goes to fund researchers to undertake a wide spectrum of basic, clinical, epidemiologic, training and other programs in universities, medical schools, and academic health centers - known as "extramural" research. NIAMS also has a cadre of scientists who conduct research on bones, joints, muscles, and skin in laboratories on the NIH campus in Bethesda - known as "intramural" research. The goal of all of the research supported - whether at the NIH or in other laboratories across the country - is to advance our scientific knowledge to improve public health.
National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOSCAE) - The National Operating Committee for Standards in Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) has research grant funding available for sports medicine researchers. Funding is available for a maximum of two years at approximately $100,000 each year. Information for applications is available at NOCSAE.org under Research – Apply for Funding. Director of Research, Frederick O. Mueller, can be reached at 919-962-5171, or Mueller@email.unc.edu.
NIH – Resources for Young Investigators - Contains links mainly within the NIH website that are of specific interest to those who have not yet obtained federal grant support.
Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) - OREF supports high-quality, clinically-relevant musculoskeletal research through grants and awards totaling $2.4 million from the Fund of 2004. Additionally, $1,847,000 was raised for use by various specialty societies.
