Indirect Benefits
AOSSM's leaders recognize that the fundamental role of the organization -- above and beyond
providing a strong value to members -- is to provide direction and growth to the orthopaedic
sports medicine profession. Toward this end, the Society is actively involved in a variety of
other activities and endeavors that at the very least indirectly benefit members. The following
general topics are especially important to members and the profession.
- Patient Education Materials
The Society develops an array of patient literature to help clinicians meet the information and
education needs of their patients. These materials are developed by orthopaedic sports medicine
specialists for their colleagues and provided at a discounted member price.
- Clinical Practice Materials
AOSSM continues to develop and disseminate monographs, pocket cards and other materials that
have direct application for orthopaedists and others with an active interest in sports medicine.
Examples of topic areas developed by the Society include concussion management, helmet removal,
female ACL injuries and the role & responsibilities of team physicians. These materials are
also available to our members at discounted prices.
- Traveling Fellowship Program
This annual international exchange with European and Pacific Rim nations provides a stimulating
environment for the global growth of sports medicine. Selected Fellows travel internationally
to lecture on and observe orthopaedic sports medicine care. International specialists make
similar trips to designated US medical centers.
- Sports Medicine Research
AOSSM maintains an active research program that provides direction, support and recognition
for sports medicine research. These activities include the First Time Investigators Grant
program, the Herklotz/AOSSM Sports Medicine Endowment and other award programs for outstanding
research. The Society also developed and validated the International Knee Documentation Form to
further provide meaningful and consistent documentation of treatment.
- Education
In addition to the educational programs listed above, the Society partners with a variety of
other medical and/or sports related organizations to provide quality educational experiences.
Presently the Society is actively involved in developing educational programs with the NFL
Physicians Society, NBA Physicians Society, American College of Sports Medicine, American
Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National
Athletic Trainers Association. To guide these endeavors, as well as to provide members with a
framework for their own educational endeavors, the Society has developed a CME Curriculum.
Intangible Benefits
While a strong case can be made for the tangible benefits of membership; the intangible benefits
are an equally compelling reason for joining the Society. Orthopaedists are looking for
organizational affiliations that meaningfully add to their professional growth, especially
at a time when medical practice is increasingly specialized.
AOSSM membership affords sports medicine specialists an unparalleled opportunity for professional
fellowship with widely recognized leaders of the specialty. Equally important, active
participation through scientific presentations and active involvement allows members to network
and establish their professional presence.
Finally, as a world leader in sports medicine education, research, communication and fellowship,
AOSSM membership affords members with a degree of recognition for their professional commitment
to sports medicine that is unparalleled.
