Gentlemen's Agreement

In 2005, the Sports Medicine NRMP Fellowship match dissolved due to a lack of the required 75% program participation. What followed was an unorganized match process which created widespread confusion and dissatisfaction for program directors and fellow applicants. In 2006, six fellowship programs formed a Gentlemens Agreement to allow fellow applicants an opportunity to interview at all programs before making a decision.

For the upcoming year, the Gentlemens Agreement is expanded and is open to any fellowship program willing to participate. Opening the Agreement to every program will provide guidelines and structure to the interview process as fellowship leaders continue to investigate long-term solutions.

To participate in the Gentlemens Agreement, fellowship program directors agree to the following:

  1. Complete the Gentlemens Agreement letter. The letter must be signed by program director, printed on the programs letterhead (with no modification/alterations) and received at AOSSM no later than November 1, 2007.
  2. Agree to not require applicants acceptance of an offered position until after January 31, 2008.
