In their response to the 1996 membership survey, AOSSM members put a high priority on the
educational offerings of the Society that are available throughout the year. At the time,
these offerings were generally based on what was assumed to have been needed or what was
popular. The Society leadership felt that a curriculum specificially addresing the needs
of AOSSM members would be a significant improvement over this approach, along with a
strategic plan for implementing and updating it.
The AOSSM Educational Curriculum for learning in sports medicine was developed by the AOSSM
Education Committee and approved by the collective Society leadership. Last revised in April
2000, this document organizes and prioritizes topics for continuing education. It is designed
to differentiate topics that should be mastered by all sports medicine practitioners and those
topics in which mastery is expected only in sub-specialists who have a particular interest in
that area.
Since the Curriculum's initial development, AOSSM has made it freely available to the
orthopaedic community to download from its website (see link below). We will continue to
look for ways to meet the continuing educational needs as the specialty grows and evolves
over time.
