Claiming Your CME for Live and In-Person Courses

Log in to the AOSSM Member Portal using the email address that was used to register for the course.
Once logged in, click on View My Account in the upper right of the screen.
Click on My CME Credits on the left-hand side of the screen.
Enter the number of credits you are claiming in increments of .25 not to exceed the amount in the Max Credits field.
IMPORTANT: You must click the Save button.
Once you click on Save, your certificate will appear in the Credits Earned section below the Unclaimed Event Credits section.
1. For athletic trainers, and if that event offered BOC credit, a BOC certificate will appear with the type of credit available for that activity (EBP or Category A).
2. CME for the American Journal of Sports Medicine manuscript review is entered by AOSSM and does not need to be claimed. A certificate will populate under Credit History and Certificates, usually by the end of the month of publication.

Claiming Your CME for eLearning Events

Log in to your eLearning Zone account.
On the left-hand menu, click on "My Resources".
Select the course for which you want to claim credits.
Complete the course evaluation.
You will then be prompted to claim your CME credits.

To view or print your CME certificate for eLearning activities:

Log in to your eLearning Zone account.
On the left-hand menu, click "Transcript".
You will be redirected to your AOSSM member account page.
Click "Access Transcript" to view and print your transcript.
Alternatively, you can print individual CME certificates under "Credits Earned".

Accreditation/Certification

American Board of Medical Specialties: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) maintains the highest standards for education, practice, and conduct through the examination, and maintenance of certification for the benefit of the public.

American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery: All American Board of Orthoapedic Surgery (ABOS) diplomates with time-limited certificates wishing to remain Board Certified are required to follow the Maintenance of Certification program. MOC is also available to time-unlimited (lifetime) certification holders who wish to voluntarily participate in the MOC process, including recertification.

American Council for Continuing Medical Education: AOSSM has been awarded Accreditation with Commendation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®). Accreditation with Commendation is the highest tier available to CME providers and is a benchmark of success for organizations that excel in providing physician education. Programs approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ by an ACCME accredited provider such as AOSSM will count toward PA certification maintenance requirements.

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is a private, non-profit organization that reviews and accredits graduate medical education (residency and fellowship) programs and the institutions that sponsor them in the United States. Accreditation is accomplished through a peer-review process and is based upon established standards and guidelines.

Board of Certification: AOSSM is a Board of Certification (BOC) Approved Provider and can award continuing education (CE) credit to athletic trainers who participate in our educational activities. The BOC regularly reviews CE courses and activities designed to help athletic trainers advance their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Participation in these educational activities assists athletic trainers in maintaining their BOC certification. The Board approves AOSSM (BOC AP#: P460) to provide continuing education for Athletic Trainers.
Physical Therapy Education: The AOSSM is approved by the State of New York as a sponsor of continuing education for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.

Independence, Resolution, Bias, and Disclosure

Accredited as a CME provider by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education® (ACCME), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) has responsibility for the educational process. The AOSSM expects all its CME activities to be balanced, independent, objective, scientifically rigorous, and in the best interest of patient care. The AOSSM mandates that promotion and education be separate and any commercial interests do not influence the planning and development of its educational activities. The AOSSM attests that the person(s) responsible for developing of this educational activity did so independently and were not influenced by commercial supporters.

The AOSSM requires that all faculty, planners, AOSSM leadership, and relevant AOSSM professional team members comply with the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support. To be compliant, each must disclose all financial relationships within the last twelve months with any commercial interest. An ACCME defined commercial interest is any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients. Consideration for participation as faculty and / or planning may be withdrawn if the disclosure is not received in a timely manner. The AOSSM oversees the process and will give you ample opportunity to provide a disclosure prior to seeking a replacement. The AOSSM understands that commercial, financial relationships do not automatically preclude the ability to provide a balanced, objective, and scientifically rigorous perspective and / or presentation(s).

The AOSSM relies on an internal review process to identify and resolve faculty and planner conflicts of interest (COI). If a disclosure reflects any such COI, the AOSSM will use the internal review process to resolve it and will communicate the resolution to the faculty or planner. The person must also assure the AOSSM that the written and verbal content of any presentation(s), educational product, faculty role, planning, or other educational involvement will be balanced, fair, scientifically rigorous, and in the best interest of patient care. Furthermore, the AOSSM learner evaluations assess the presence of commercial bias in all its educational activities, and the responsible oversight committee monitors those evaluations.

Expectations for faculty presentations are that they will be of the highest quality. The AOSSM is responsible for validating the clinical content of CME activities that are provided. All faculty and planners must agree to the following:

All recommendations involving clinical medicine in a CME activity must be based on evidence that is accepted within the profession of medicine as adequate justification for their indications and contradictions in the care of the patients.
All scientific research referred to, reported, or used in CME in support or justification of a patient care recommendation must conform to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
Content must be free from any commercial bias. Strive to use generic names to the extent possible. If trade names are used, reference several trade names, if available.
Explicitly and clearly emphasize any investigational use of a commercial product or procedure. Explicitly and clearly emphasize any off-label uses of a substance or product (not approved in the US for the use under discussion).
Ensure that all presentations are HIPAA compliant.

Educational Curriculum

The AOSSM Educational Curriculum for learning in sports medicine was developed by the AOSSM Education Committee and approved by the collective Society leadership. The Educational Curriculum differentiates topics that should be mastered by all sports medicine practitioners and those topics in which mastery is expected only in sub-specialists who have a particular interest in that area.
