AOSSM Statement on Orthopaedic Surgeons on the Sidelines

As a medical professional society, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) was formed nearly 50 years ago to educate individuals on injury prevention, rehabilitation and treatment. Our members are team physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists and researchers who are committed to the care and well-being of athletes of all ages and activity levels. AOSSM members have been at the center of positive change in all of athletics regarding safety issues, treatment protocols and cutting-edge research. In our current environment, it’s imperative that our members not disengage from this involvement but more appropriately, become more engaged in solutions. In addition, our Society and its members collectively work hard to cultivate evidence-based knowledge, provide extensive educational outreach, and patient guidance that leverages science and advocates for the safe practice of sports. Our members provide useful guidance to help athletes, their families and coaches understand how to avoid and treat sports injuries. Without orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine–trained professionals actively participating on the sidelines, injuries would not be treated in a timely manner and might, in some cases, lead to greater harm both long and short term; this is especially true in the case of concussions. We can only take care of these athletes and make the sport safer if we are a part of their care, not removed from it.
